DEPUTIES RESPOND TO DROWNING FRIDAY EVENING

MARYVILLE, TENNESSEE – Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong is sad to announce a 3-year-old girl passed away after she drowned in a pool Friday evening.

The girl was taken by AMR to University of Tennessee Medical Center where she was pronounced dead Friday evening. Preliminary results of an autopsy performed at the Knox County Regional Forensics Center Saturday morning confirmed the girl died as a result of accidental drowning.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Friday, Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence on West Cumberland Drive in Louisville to the call of a possible drowning. When deputies arrived, AMR Ambulance was on the scene performing CPR on the girl. Deputies spoke with family members who told them the toddler was eating dinner at a picnic table in the backyard. When they went to check on her, they found her in the pool and got her out. Witnesses immediately began CPR on the girl until first responders arrived on the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office Investigations unit is continuing its investigation.

“We are saddened by this young girl’s death, and I extend my deepest sympathies to her family,” Sheriff Berrong said. “I cannot imagine losing a child, especially a baby. It is always heartbreaking for our deputies when we respond to any incident when a child or children are the victims. This was a tragic incident, and my deputies and I feel very deeply for her family.”
