On Sunday, February 10, 2019, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Knoxville Police Department officers were conducting traffic enforcement on Western Avenue when they observed a Buick LeSabre driving west with a broken driver’s side window with plastic covering the window area. The vehicle matched the description of the suspect wanted in connection to the Vista Apartments shooting on Friday. The officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle at the intersection of Middlebrook Pike and Old Weisgarber. The vehicle was discovered to be stolen. As officers approached the vehicle there was an obvious odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed a small baggie of marijuana along with a rolled burnt marijuana blunt in between the seats. Officers also located two open bottles of alcohol with one being located in the front of the vehicle. A check of the driver’s license revealed it had been revoked in December 2017. The occupant of the vehicle, La-Drey Ya’Wonn Gross, was placed into custody and transported to the Safety Building where she was interviewed by investigators.
At the conclusion of the interview, Gross was charged yesterday with Attempted Second Degree Murder, Especially Aggravated Robbery, and Especially Aggravated Burglary. The investigation into the shooting revealed that Gross and two additional suspects entered the victim’s Vista apartment and demanded the victim’s drugs prior to shooting her.
In addition, Gross was charged with Theft of Property (Vehicle), Driving on a Revoked License, Driving While License Suspended, and Simple Possession. Gross is being held in the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility on a $140,000 bond.
