For immediate release: Today at 1:06 pm, the Hazard Police Department responded to the Hazard Middle school in reference to a school threat. This school threat was made known to School Resource Officer Tim Engle. Officer Engle, learning that the threat was credible, contacted Deputy Chief James East. Deputy Chief East arrived at the Middle School and began his investigation. While gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses, East was able to determine who was involved. Officer Engle seized two knives during the investigation and turned over the knives for processing. After interviews concluded, East made contact with the Court Designated Worker,the County Attorney and the District Judge. Through consultation and presenting the facts, 2 juveniles were charged each with 11 counts of terroristic threatening 2nd degree and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon on school property. As the investigation continues, additional juveniles may be charged. At this time no further threat exists.
