DECATUR MAN KILLED IN CRASH ON THE DRAGON
MARYVILLE, TENNESSEE – Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong said a Decatur, Tennessee man was killed as a result of injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash that involved two other vehicles on the Dragon.
Douglas Earl Stoeppelwerth, 70, of Decatur, Tennessee, was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of the other vehicles were not injured.
At 2:30 p.m. Monday, Stoeppelwerth was driving his 2000 Kawasaki motorcycle north on U.S. Highway 129 at mile marker 7 in the area known as the Dragon. Stoeppelwerth attempted to negotiate a right turn when he crossed the double yellow line and swiped a vehicle traveling south, a 2015 Toyota Scion driven by Stephanie A. Lewis, 19, of Glenelg, Maryland. The impact caused Stoeppelwerth to be thrown from his motorcycle and onto the southbound lane and directly into the path of another vehicle traveling south – a 2016 Subaru BRZ driven by Adam R. Treaster, 22, of Johns Creek, Georgia. Personnel with AMR Ambulance Service pronounced Stoeppelwerth dead at the scene.
Stoeppelwerth was wearing a Department of Transportation approved helmet.
Stephanie Lewis and Adam Treaster were both wearing seatbelts. The driver-side airbag on Lewis’ vehicle deployed.
The Blount County Sheriff’s Office investigated the crash.
