Update on KPD Officer involved shooting

On Monday, November 26, 2018 at approximately 1:18pm., the E-911 Center received a call from a residence located at 3400 Compton Street. The caller indicated a female was cutting herself. A few minutes later a neighbor called and indicated a female, without any clothes on was in the street cutting herself. The female had also cut another individual. That victim was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

When officers arrived on the scene they located the female in the street with a military-style knife. Interaction between the officers and the suspect escalated which resulted in an officer having to discharge his firearm in defense of his life.

The suspect, Sierra McCouley, age 49 was transported to UT Medical Center for treatment where she later died as a result of her injuries. The medical examiner will perform an autopsy.

Officer James Gadd, a 23 year veteran with The Knoxville Police Department was not injured and as standard operating procedure has been placed on administrative leave.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office was on scene yesterday and their investigation is ongoing. Updates will be provided as they become available.
